For Governance

The governance situation at UBC is currently not meeting the needs of our populace. We also need to make sure that when we change it, we all have a say, and we get the best possible system. What that is right now is not for me to say, but for us all to decide. Whether we want a reform of the current system, amalgamation with Vancouver, or incorporation of a separate municipality, we need to make sure that we all have a say in how our peninsula is governed.
- Consultation. We all need a say in how we are governed – that is the cornerstone of our democracy. To determine the best possible option, I will set out a series of consultations and town halls to discuss what the needs of the different parts of our community are, and how certain types of governance structures will address them.
- Gain Electoral Area A representation on the Translink Council of Mayors. UBC is the second highest destination of transit in MetroVancouver, but has no representation on the long term planning board of the transit authority. If elected, I will attend all Council of Mayors meetings, and work to put ongoing representation into law.
How we govern ourselves is the biggest question that we are going to face in the next several years. It will determine our future – the repercussions from this are going to be significant, and we must be considerate of what they are rather than rushing headlong down one path or another. We have to get this right – let’s take some time doing so.
