For Students

The University, and by extension, students, are going to be effected by zoning changes and governance shifts. I have been a strong advocate for student issues, as a former Vice President External Affairs of the AMS, and have been involved in lobbying with the RBF for a stronger campus community. We can take a number of simple steps to help build up our community engagement.
- Save our Institutional Autonomy. If our governance is going to change, we have to make sure that it is still going to be UBC that is going to be administering our school, and not another body like Vancouver City Council. Bodies with student representation and have the best interests of the University at heart have to be in charge.
- Residential Environmental Assessments. If we live in Rez, we should know that where we are living is safe. All new residences should be built to a higher standard than they are right now, and older residences must conduct and publish environmental assessments to make sure that students are living in a safe and healthy place.
- Create a Student Village. UBC is one of very few Universities that doesn’t have a decent student community near our campus. We need to push for zoning and development incentives that will help create secondary suites, student rental houses, and other affordable options near the campus.
Simple solutions are easy to promise. I do not, however, think that achieving all these things is going to be easy. I will work hard to achieve these goals, because doing so is worth it.
