For the Islands

The Islands of Vancouver; Passage, Boyer and Barnston; have been neglected, and need someone to take on the challenge and get things done for them. Here, zoning is also an issue as well, as is the delivery of essential services. I have a five point plan for the Islands.
- Schedule building inspections. If you are expected to be at your home for your building inspection, you should probably know when it’s coming in advance. I will hold the Annual Picnic of Building Inspections on a weekend, and let people know that it’s coming.
- Secure fire protection. Whether the islands are part of a city or not, everyone has the right not to die in a fire. Whether it is through installing fire pumps, or securing an agreement with cities with fireboats, fire protection must be established on a continual basis.
- Enable voting by mail. Regardless of where we live, we all deserve the right to participate democratically. Our democratic access should not be hindered by the fact that we don’t live on the main drag. Voting by mail can be done with accountability measures, and be proofed against fraud – let’s make it easier to participate.
- Define ownership and governance. If the governance situation at UBC changes, I will not let the Islands be left out in the cold. I will work to replace the outdated covenant governance system and define ownership, property rights and the property lines.
- Enshrine Island requirements in building code. Island living is different, and zoning should reflect that. I will work to amend the building requirements to appropriately apply to the Island situation.
The Islands have not been adequately represented by the current commissioner. I will work to represent all of Electoral Area A. That includes the citizens on the Islands. I will hold open meetings, and be accountable to all of my constituents.
